Supporting your Child in Reading

Getting children to read at home can be a fun adventure! For those in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), make it playful—use picture books and ask questions about the images to spark their imagination. Sing nursery rhymes to develop phonemic awareness, making reading feel like a game!

Moving on to Key Stage 1 (KS1), consider reading together daily. Choose books that interest them and encourage them to sound out words. Activities like creating a 'reading corner' can make reading time feel special and inviting.

For Key Stage 2 (KS2), engage their interests by choosing more complex stories—perhaps a series they can get hooked on. Discuss the plot and characters to boost comprehension. Encourage them to read aloud, as this builds confidence. Remember, celebrating progress, no matter how small, will keep their motivation high! Reading should be an enjoyable part of their daily routine.
